What it means to be an Alumnus

An alumnus is a graduate or a former of an academic institution whom has completed theirs studies.
When I was asked to author a piece on what it is like to be an alumnus, I felt honoured of being granted an opportunity of providing such a prestigious services. I then took a walk down a memory lane of my years as a Tsogo learner. I remembered how proud and blessed I used to feel by being a part of a school which was the best public school in the province, how I used to feel that my world was an oyster- full of endless opportunities; but I also remembered how trapped I would feel as I couldn’t reach the stars due to the lack of ‘know how?’ or maybe also because I did not have the right tools and words of wisdom to get to that place especially from those who have left before me.
Alumni is a composition of a society of people who provide a platform for networking and nurturing bonds between the learners, the teachers and amongst the other alumni.
Personally I think being an alumnus is also about being an investor, a shareholder as well as a family of the Tsogo high school.
Oprah Winfrey once said “I don’t think you ever stop giving. I really don’t. I think it’s an on-going process. And it’s not just about being able to write a check. It’s being able to touch somebody’s life…
I believe that when we give as alumni, we water the seeds of wisdom, opportunities and also pave a way for our younger brothers and sisters and these dreams shared don’t have to be in a form of money only but through great advice, physical involvement and time spent.
We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been — a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free. As much as one Star Hawk
Tsogo High School is our community, our home and our son and daughter. Our commitment to its people, their growth and blossom depends on our humble giving in any way of our talents’ being. There’s no substitute in what we give or how we give it. Like they say” It is never too little when you give all you have got.
By Caroline Motloba and I am a Tsogo alumnus of Class of ‘96.

Alumni Profile of Thabo Ncalo

When did you start and finish at Tsogo?

I went across to Tsogo from Morekolodi Primary in 1992. At the time Grades 7 to 9 (Std. 5 to 7) were ‘under’ Marian Middle School – but it’s always been one Tsogo. The ‘middle’ school was just a Bophuthatswana government creation I guess. I finished my matric at Tsogo in 1997.

Where did you do your primary schooling? (name and place)

I did my primary school at Morekolodi Primary in Mmakau. At the time the school was under Sister Kieran. I started at Morekolodi in 1989.

What further education institutions did you attend? (name and place)

From Tsogo I went to the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg to pursue a degree in Commerce (Finance & Investments). I’ve also done other post grad courses and professional courses and exams.
