Its Been a great Year, we look forward to the next….

Tsogo From the Goal Post

This is my first pseudo editorial. It has a been hard to write but it serves as a reflection for the last year (June 2009 – June 2010) for me and the online alumni directory. I have split this  up into 3 small sections really highlighting what I think is important at this time and some things that I have been heavily thinking about.

Where we come from?

The Directory started as an idea that I had “incubating” since 2007. It had its roots in a lot of different other ideas but at its core was connecting Alumni. The connections that are made between people form the the communities that we build. Through the power of the internet we have a new opportunity to connect the previously unconnected. Alumni normally keep contact with a few of their classmates through the years. Our ambition is to connect all Alumni to each other in one way or another. Not just for them to meet but for them to share their experiences and nurture each other. That being the spirit that is Ubuntu.

Alumni News (AN): Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Lesego Phateng (LP):  Okay…I’m from Mmakau and I have an older brother who lives in Mafikeng. He’s been very helpful and supportive throughout my school years. I live with my mom and dad. You know – throughout my matric year my parents and I really got on well (smiles). They understood my study pressures and gave me the space and time to study which was great. My family has always been very supportive! I was at Morekolodi Primary and then went on to Tsogo. AN:

We’re talking to you because of your outstanding matric results. Was there a lot of pressure in your matric year?

LP: Yes there was. At first I was a bit relaxed but the teachers at Tsogo really scared us. They told us that matric wasn’t easy and we had to work really hard. I think that pressure was good and it got us working. But to be honest – matric is really a build-up of work from previous years. Grade 12 to me was all about what we did in Grade 11 and other lower classes

“OUTSTANDING!

The Pretoria News carried a story with the headline “Prime moment for a high achiever” on January 8th 2010 following the 2009 Matric Results’ release. It was about a matric learner from Ga-Rankuwa who obtained 8 distinctions in the matric exams last year. This high achiver is a young man known by everyone at Tsogo as Tshepo Maubane.

We celebrate Tsogo’s 35 years of excellence by bringing you  our conversations with two outstanding Class of 2009 matriculants. Our second honoured new alumna Ms. Lesego Phateng obtained 7 distinctions in 2009 and is one of the most inspiring and focused young women from our community.

Alumni Society Secretary Mr. Thabo Ncalo caught up with Mr. Maubane on campus in Hatfield, Pretoria and Ms. Phateng at her new Student Centre at University of Jhb. (RAU)  to find out how they achieved their amazing results and where they see themselves in the years to come.
