The Tsogo career expo was all about hope. The hope of someday waking up to a brighter future. It reminded me of the little learner in me who dared to dream against all odds. My favorite part was interacting with the learners. I was no longer a medical doctor, but could talk to them face to face to reaffirm the power of their dreams. My presentation entailed careers in the health sector, from medicine and dentistry to allied health courses such as dietetics, physiotherapy etc. I provided a basic tutorial about the requirements for university admission and what each career mainly focuses on and clarity when it came to becoming a specialist in the medical fraternity.

Dr Faith Refilwe Mahlaela addressing the learners at the 10th annual career expo

This expo offers a platform where we can give back by planting seeds of hope. You’ve just got to get involved so that our united efforts can go so much further. In terms of how it can be improved, perhaps the community and media can get involved on a greater capacity to share this potentially life changing expo with a larger audience. All in all, I highly commend the organizers and am hopeful about the future. What a privilege to be part of this amazing expo.

Learners attended a Career Expo which was held at Tsogo Secondary on 1 March 2019. It is an annual event hosted by Tsogo Alumni Society for the learners to critically figure out their careers paths and future as a whole. Learners from grade 9 to 12 were invited, as well as grade 12 learners from neighbouring schools, Malatse Motsepe Secondary School and Mothotlung Secondary School.

Lerato Mmotsa , Grade 12 [2019]

During the first session information about tertiary life, university admission requirements and financial assistance was presented to grade 11 and 12 learners .This session was followed by interaction of learners with presenters from different companies and tertiary institutions. Classrooms were used as stalls for presentations. The companies called were relevant. Not only did some companies bring knowledge about certain career fields, they also brought goods and prices for learners who participated the most during the presentations, which is what made the sessions even more interesting.

The yearly event can be improved by inviting more universities. The organisers can plead with companies to increase the scope of career opportunities they offer as much as possible. This may be done by having multiple representatives from the same company.

After the career expo, grade 11 learners should be checked occasionally to be motivated to work their skin to the bone so that they can meet and exceed the minimum university requirements. The Tsogo Alumni Society can set aside a day or two to assist grade 12 learners with the overall, where possible tertiary applications.

The learners are grateful for the event and are looking forward to the next one.

Ntefeng Moloisane [Tsogo 2009]

The Alumni Society has over the years contributed towards the achievement of various milestones such as school infrastructure improvements, learner career guidance and establishment of bursaries and scholarships. This has been possible through the continued support and tireless effort of teachers, the school management team, parents and learners. I think that the goal and objective moving forward should be fostering these relationships and collaborative effort, through frequent and consistent engagements so as to make Tsogo Secondary a conducive environment for both teaching and learning.

I would also like to encourage more individuals from the Alumni to come on board and become active participants in this course because “Alone we can do so little and together we can do so much”. (Hellen Keller). I trust that 2019 will be a fruitful year for us all filled with endless possibilities.

Over and above the Career Expo held in March, 2019 the boy learners have participated in the Loxion Science STEM camp.
We need to improve the experiences that students have outside the classroom. To this end, in 2019 we would like to start a fund to be able to assist students in attending enriching events at organisations and Higher education institutions.
We will provide you with more details about the day’s programme well ahead of the event so you are aware of your time slot should you wish to join us.

Many thanks for your consideration on this matter and we wait to hear from you.
