Kgomotso Sekhute (Tsogo 1986)

Alumni Profile of Kgomotso Grace Sekhute. Now proudly Kgomotso, since my conversion days at Varsity!

I started at Tsogo High School in 1983 and matriculated in 1986. Earlier, I attended Nong Primary School in Mabopane and remember fondly how my dad would walk me to school in winter go tshela nokana! I studied at the University of the Witwatersrand first (BA Social Sciences) and proceeded to Medunsa (Now University of Limpopo for my post graduation studies. I qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 1995. In 2002 I completed the Programme in Business Leadership, with UNISA School of Business Leadership.

Currently, I head up the Talent Management Centre of Excellence for Rand Merchant Bank. My role is fascinating because it entails constantly finding innovative ways of attracting, developing and retaining top talent.

Before this role I consulted to a range of Public and Private sector organisations as a Human Capital management specialist (1999 and 2010), where I was involved in several diversity/transformation, leadership development and change management initiatives.

My mom and dad remain my primary role models. I watched with admiration how my dad worked himself up from being a miner to a senior manager before he passed on at the age of 33; and how my mother raised my brother and I and put her needs last to see us educated and successful in life.

We all know how Tsogo Alumni have managed to shine and stand out wherever they go. We owe it all to our great teachers at the time- Mme Mma Letebele, Sr Majela, Sr Immaculate. What seemed like torture and old-fashioned at the time – e.g. “short, neat and natural hair”, from Mrs Letebele; has really humbled us, enabled us to focus on real priorities in life and contributed to who we are today!

To current Students

You are part of a great school, make the most of it! And one day when you are all grown up and successful, please remember to plough back to Tsogo High.

I remember how when we first arrived at Tsogo, we could not always understand some of our English-speaking teachers, and how we battled to build simple sentences. So at lunch time, “Sr Makolata” – as we fondly called her, would make you say “ 1 slice of bread and 2 slices of bread” until you got it right, while the other classmates were waiting to buy lunch behind you. It’s very funny to think about those moments now, but that’s what still makes Tsogo special so many years on.

I had some special friends at school, who I still remember fondly and miss dearly – (Mmabusang, Angela, Botlhale and Pearl)

Significant Achievements: I believe in modesty, so this is a tough question. I guess my greatest achievements include being a mother to three gorgeous girls, a grand-daughter and a professional who tries her best to put family first.
