Alumni Profile of Tshepo Patrick Kgobe

When did you start and finish at Tsogo?

Started in 1986 and matriculated in 1991

Where did you do your other schooling?

I started Mpho Primary in block C(Grade 1), Then went to Matsepa in Block B (Grade 2,3 and 4), then completed my last two years of primary with Ntsie in Block C (Grade 5 and 6) all in Mabopane. The reason for this moving around was my father being an educator was always looking for the best benefit for his kids in education and discipline.

What further education institutions did you attend?

I went University of Kwazulu Natal (UKZN) Westville campus (B.Sc. Civil Engineering) and UKZN Durban campus (Post graduate diploma in business management).

What do you currently do?

I have Multiple roles at the current moment and that is the way I like it, I am Executive Director at Hatch Africa, I am responsible for Business development, Transformation and Black Economic Empowerment, I am also responsible for Corporate Social Investments, I still remain fully involved in core business which is EPCM projects.

I enjoy what I do because it allows me to do what I cherish the most in life and that is to see people develop to their full potential. Africa can only start to grow when Africa develops its key resource “People”. The job also allows me to be reminded everyday of the greatest principle of success “Gratitude”.

What inspires you?

A lot a people are inspired by great people that they read about but I am inspired by my Dad, from where he came from to his journey today, I marvel at the tenacity of the man and I am reminded that I did not walk that far for success and thus I need to be grateful and appreciative of what I have. I am also inspired by the people of this continent and this country specifically, the indelible spirit that keeps someone waking up every day at four o’clock in the morning so that his kids could go to school and hope for a better tomorrow that is better than his.

Message to Alumni

  • Remember where you came from, the reason we have become more prominent than most people we meet is because of the deep spiritual grounding we received in Tsogo – Einstein writes:

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed. It was the experience of mystery — even if mixed with fear — that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds: it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity. In this sense, and only this sense, I am a deeply religious man… I am satisfied with the mystery of life’s eternity and with a knowledge, a sense, of the marvelous structure of existence — as well as the humble attempt to understand even a tiny portion of the Reason that manifests itself in nature.”

(Albert Einstein, The world as I see it , 1931)

  • Who are you mentoring today, What will be your legacy? Invest in people and you will see the return in the progress of the country.
  • Understand and be Conscious of power, “ the essence of power is the awareness of power” as a leader what you say could change the fate of a country be aware.

Message to current Students

  • Be an expert or the best in what you choose to do, If you are not going to be the best at it, Why bother. “The really valuable thing in the pageant of human life seems to me not the political state, but the creative, sentient individual, the personality; it alone creates the noble and the sublime, while the herd as such remains dull in thought and dull in feeling”.
  • Seek to lead than to follow South Africa could use a few of those.
  • Remain grounded and remember who you are – Rudyard Kipling writes

“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it”…

What is/are your fondest memory/memories of Tsogo High School?

I remember Summer days on the balcony in the high school, with my good old buddy Molefe Lenyai watching people go by and talking a lot of non-sense. Going into Miss Letebele’s office for punishment it was always amazing how it was always cold in that office even in the summertime and we spent a lot of time in that office. The closeness and friendship of our class 10C, which still survives to this day. The simplicity of life back in those times when school kids used to be just that ‘kids’ and how the smell of the coming rain would just worry us because we always knew that meant the bus would get stuck somewhere.

What Significant Achievements would you like to highlight?

“Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized “.I have never been one to believe in “living in past time paradise”, so much still needs to be done for Africa and the African child . I have achieved plenty more out of a need to be different and to be at the cutting edge rather than for the sake of achievement. I value “intelligence and legacy” over “significance or dividends”.
